So my weight officially hit the EVERYBODY PANIC! number of 160# on Monday. I was pretty depressed about it for a while, but have galvanized my resolve to start an exercise plan. To that end, I have broken down and increased my dorktastic status to "hopeless." Diet alone doesn't seem to be fixing the problem. Staying on a 1200 calorie/day diet only seems to stall the weight gain and does NOTHING to promote weight loss. It has become obvious that I will need to start a regular exercise regimen, and since I quit dancing, I haven't been able to find anything that motivated me enough to MOVE on a regular basis. (I used to joke that you'd have to PAY ME to exercise, and that statement has proven to be truer than intended. *sigh*)

So. Last night I went by Best Buy and bought DDR.

Yes. I am using a video game for weight loss purposes. You may now commence heckling. I know I am. But I KNOW that dumb though it may be, the positive feedback of a mechanical "DING!" and a flashy light will motivate me to play something as silly as solitaire for HOURS. With any luck, the same will be true for faux aerobics. This also has the advantage of being something I can do even when the weather is crappy (like now).

I played my silly game for 2 hours last night. I probably didn't burn as many calories as my play time indicated I should, but apparently the hardest part of DDR is keeping the dogs off the control mat. Maggie reset the game no less than 3 times in the first half hour in her attempt to determine WHAT THE HELL THE MONKEY WAS DOING. Eventually I turned it into a double game where the game for the dogs was "Stay on the sofa until the monkey gets off the mat," and the game for me was DDR. I had to play with a squirt bottle in my hand to fend off curious dog feet, and I worked in a series of on-the-mat/off-the-matt fake-outs to re-enforce the parameters of the Doggie Game.

My balancing muscles are evidently far more out-of-shape than my large muscle groups. Today, my ankles and arches hurt, but there is no noticeable difference in the rest of my legs. Perhaps today I'll be able to play to the point that my calves actually feel it.

:/

Wish me luck.

Haha this one girl in college used DDR as exercise all the time, but she lived on the 3rd floor of an apartment building and the lower tenants would call her all the time to complain. I don't actually think she ever lost any weight.

I'm in almost the same situation...minus the real-life heath reason for it. I've just gotten lazy :)

Good luck! Getting in shape is harder than quitting smoking!

LUCK!

it's beastly, finding something that you enjoy doing to stay active.

I shall *hopefully* have the last laugh eating pizza when I want at 130#...

*sigh*

Why does dieting always involve giving up *yummy* food???

it really doesn't... but maybe it's because I find veggies so yummy!

i've been thinking of doing that, or getting a wii fit when they are available. let us know how it works out =)

I was thinking about getting a Wii but since a gym membership is actually cheaper, I decided I should start out with a console we've already GOT (PS2/PS3) and if I can STICK TO THE PLAN for several months, THEN I will upgrade.

I shall keep everyone posted.

Sorry to hear that you are enormous! Poor Lizard! ;-) But DDR sounds like a fun way to work off the excess. Lemme know if you ever want to explore tennis or fencing! And splott and I might go climbing sometime too...

Hehe. That is awesome. Good luck with this new plan. Should be a fun way to get in shape.

Good luck with the DDR. I've had a plan in the back of my head to set up a geek gym in the basement, with DDR for arobics. I have a set, but haven't used it much. Between the dog and the cats, foot space gets hard.

I also though of taito drum master with weighted sticks for an upper body workout.
