While I was having what was apparently a mild flu, I spun wool whenever I felt up to it. I made 5 skeins of plied heather-grey wool...


I can't even begin to tell you how comforting and pleasing I find these little bits of string that I made. I still have POUNDS AND POUNDS of wool to spin, but I'll be working at it a little bit every day. I will dye some of the white wool with onion skin or turmeric when I get to it to make a tasty gold color. eithni is interested in attempting to dye some roving, so I will probably make an order for more white roving sometime soon. (There is a 10 pound minimum order so anyone who wants to get in on a wool order with me at $9.00/lb is more than welcome to jump on in. I believe we may be able to get an additional discount by ordering the entire 16 lb "bump" of roving.) Probably early November will be a good time to make that order.

I have been doing a bit of thinking about getting an actual digital camera for taking better pictures of my crafts, and my brain (which has been doing lots of shopping on eBay when it thinks I'm not looking) has come up with an interesting proposal. While this certainly isn't the most lucrative use of my time, I AM able to get wool for pretty cheap these days, and I see that the going rate on hand-spun yarn on etsy.com and ebay.com is about $30 for a 2 oz skein of plied yarn and $20 for a single. I was thinking about listing some stuff and seeing if anyone buys it. Whatever "pocket money" I make from such a venture would go into a "Pennsic Fund" as opposed to being counted as "income" at this point, but I would be interested to see if I am able to make any sort of income as a "craftswoman." The reason that the better camera brings this to mind, is that my brain's current objection to the plan is that my cell phone takes crappy pictures, and surely any buyer would be put off by the chintzy photo quality of the product.

In the mean time, if anyone wants to buy handspun yarn for knitting, gimme a holler. I make you special "friend" rate or better yet, a trade. ;-)

In other news, now that the weather is getting cold, my studio needs curtains to keep out the cold. I was looking at all the skeins of yarn that I have made and thinking of the skeins that I will make soon and wondering where the heck I will store them, when I thought... "Why bother with curtains? Why not hang skeins of yarn off my curtain rods where I can enjoy their beauty and benefit from their warmth!" I just need to hang a second curtain rod half way down the windows because my skeins aren't quite as tall as the windows... I love this plan... I will need to do a double row to keep the dyed wools from being bleached out by the sun, but the plain whites will do just fine seeing winter sunlight while blocking out the cold.

Now it's just a matter of implementing my plan... I need dowel rods...

Also, if you're looking for a thicker yarn, I've recently learned how to "chainply" or "Navajo Ply" and would be interested in trying it out on a willing victim.
