Woof. Busy, busy, busy! But at least my first solo flight on a client site seems to be going well. *knock on wood* Everything is going *mostly* the way it's supposed to in all the manuals with just enough problems that I'm not getting the eerie sensation that something's about to go horribly wrong. (There have been times when I've found myself in a data center staring suspiciously at the monitoring server and thinking, "It's quiet... Too quiet..." And then I restart the monitorring service and get 28923982938 notifications of things that were horribly wrong, but stuck in a queue somewhere.)

Thus far, I'm ahead of schedule with the installation that I'm working on. I'm still a little nervous about the wrap up phase of this project as it involves things other than tinkering with someone else's servers, but I've done my homework for tomorrow and that's all my attention span can handle for now. Yet another 12 hour work day under my belt.

I'm actually rather proud of myself. There was an issue with a document repository that didn't migrate properly today. I resolved the issue myself before the people that WROTE the software could figure out what had gone wrong. *yay me!*

This, of course, only counters my idiocy yesterday - fortunately that wasn't really a client facing thing. It's a long story without much of a point really, but if you're that bored, do read on:

The first problem is that this hotel has Magical-Exploding-One-Serving-Coffee-Makers of Doom. The coffee that you put into it is lousy and weak, and the machine itself makes REALLY scary explody noises as it's processing - steam bursts out everywhere, and at the end of it all, you get about 3.5 ounces of... I shan't profane the name of coffee by naming the liquid as such.... So that's right out.

And the client site? The client site charges $.80/cup of coffee... I have NEVER worked for an IT organization that CHARGED for COFFEE. That's just ASKING double length network outages. Most of the IT geeks I know prefer to get their caffienne by IV at this point... Half of us turn up our noses at the horrible "free" office coffee and bring in our own obscure Colombian roasts... But we NEVER pay $.80/cup for 8 oz of bad coffee. That's sacriledge.

Neither of these things really should have phased me, however, because I PLANNED AHEAD. I brought my little Starbucks single-serving coffee press and an electric kettle with me "just in case." I used them ALL DAY yesterday. I had 5 cups of coffee... and yet... I still had a SCREAMING head ache. ALL. DAY. I ended up going to bed early because of it.

Usually my headaches are brought on by 1 of 2 things: Not enough COFFEE or not enough WATER. I pounded BOTH all day yesterday in an attempt to fix my head. 5 bottles of water and 5 cups of coffee did NOTHING. I was mystified... Until this morning.

I went to make more coffee this morning and looked closely at the bag that I'd picked up at Starbucks on Tuesday night... "DECAF."

*SONOFABITCH!*

Part of the reason I was pissed, rather than chagrined, was that I'd spent 5 minutes longer than usual poring over the bean selection because I wanted to make SURE that what I got HAD CAFFIENE IN IT. I was SURE.

Slowly my brain replayed the events in the Starbucks... There was a line. The lady two ahead of me was also getting her beans ground. The girl at the grinder was a moron. The register guy had to show her how to use the grinder. He came back and took my money. ($11 on USELESS COFFEE!!!) She fucked around for 10 minutes and finally gave me a decorative paper bag with a bag of coffee in it... I never looked at the coffee bag, and in fact, never really took it out of the paper bag it came in.

Somewhere out there, the women who was two ahead of me in line at the Starbucks, is probably VIBRATING HER ASS OFF and wondering WHY.

Today I got a pound of CAFFIENATED COFFEE from Dunkin' Donuts. I boycotted Starbucks for 24 hours in protest.

My sister swears Dunkin' Donuts' coffee is better anyway.

*cracking up at thought of vibrating lady* I bet she did more than boycot the store!
