I am busy. Super-duper busy... And aparently a masochist.

I'm in the middle of the network migration for which I was hired as "project staff" at the Uni. (The migration being the "project".) Hopefully by the end of summer I will be a "permanent employee" of the department, or I'll be looking for another job after Pennsic.... again. So I've been putting in a lot of extra hours on weekends to get people's computers migrated as "seemlessly as possible." Working 12 straight days stresses me out... Working with a bunch of tightly scheduled luddites REALLY stresses me out.

So given the fact that the next month and a half is going to suck ANYWAY, I figure I'd liven things up by quitting smoking. I haven't had a cigarette since April 8th, and so far no one is dead. Having quit for 3 months last summer, I must say that quitting this time was much easier... I just had a lingering feeling that I was forgetting something. I can't tell you how many times I checked to make sure I hadn't left the oven on...

But as we all know, I am a retard, so those two things weren't enough. I am displeased with my current weight, and I live in terror that quitting smoking will make me gain even MORE weight, so of course, NOW is a GREAT time to start a diet and exercise plan...

I'm really REALLY amazed that no one is dead. Like, really.

Initially, I lost 9 lbs, but according to the scales, I gained 4 back during coronation. :-P. I find it hard to believe that the 7 oz steak I had on Saturday evening did this to me...

Aaaaanyway.

All that is not the point. The point is, that as my reward for not killing anyone, I have bought myself the recipe software of my dreams. It allows me to create and export cookbooks complete with nutrition information for every recipe:

(Notice that I've left of the crunchy topping because I am on a freaking diet. I was pleased to discover that a good sized portion of this only has 230 calories... I love cheesy potatoes.)

So... Yeah... My next task will be getting all my favorite recipes imported into my cookbook.

How come you get to eat cheezy potatoes on a diet? Isn't that mostly carbs and fat? No fair. I don't dare go anywhere near a tater.

And there will be weekly (perhaps daily?) calls to Zig to make sure you havn't killed, maimed, or caused psychological harm... you're nuts, girl. Quitting the smokes AND a diet? OK, then.

Congrats on not smoking! We just had a visit from a co-worker off work currently recuperating from surgery. He had cancerous spots removed from both lungs. Needless to say he's not a smoker any longer.
Good luck on the diet, too.

Tell me more about the recipe software...

It's called Living Cookbook and you can download/buy it from here (http://www.livingcookbook.com/). It's probably the LEAST user-friendly cookbook software out of the "big girl" cooking software, but being as it was designed BY computer geeks FOR computer geeks, it has way more features than some of the more expensive options. (Like the ability to easily email my recipies to other people, straight out of my database, and the ability to import pictures of what my finished casseroles and curries look like. If I want to get REALLY fancy, I can even import video into it so that I can show how one should properly put filling into gyoza skins and seal them up before frying them.)

It's a pretty keen toy, but not for those who wanted something to make LESS work for them.... ;-) There are cookbooks that just come with recipes. I wanted something that would allow me to tweak recipes and make them more asian, or more period, or more healthy. Next time you see me at an event, grab me and I'll show it to you. (I pretty much ALWAYS have my laptop with me.)

The question is: does it came with this feature:

SELECT * from recepies where ingredient1="steak" and CHANCE_OF_GETTING_CLOGGED_ARTIES <=1%;

If so, I'm sooo getting it ;) </computer geek>

heh. I almost think quitting multiple things at once is almost easier - radical life change and all that. It is easy to slip into old habits when things are too familiar. Good luck! I'm so happy for you!

I have a feeling that I'm about to become as obsessive with my recipe software as you are with your LibraryThing.

It'll let me make/compile separate cookbooks, so I may start compiling period recipes... MAY. Normally I don't really like the food well enough to ask for a recipe, but you know... It's nice to know that I have the option...

Wow. Good for you! I love Cheesy potatoes. Maybe this weekend...

It's the Living Cookbook, which I purchased/downloaded from here (http://www.livingcookbook.com/). It's not the most USER FRIENDLY software out there, but with my computing background it's not too difficult, once you get the hang of it.

Adding things to the ingredients database (with all the associated nutrition information) is the biggest pain in the ass, but it's probably my fault for cooking with all kinds of weird foreign ingredients. Potatoes it knew about, Nampla was a bit trickier...

First of all, you do not need to diet--although I will be the first to admit I have been having the "oh my god pennsic is coming I need to diet" feeling as well. On the other hand, the quitting smoking thing makes me a verrrry happy person. :-)
