So the weekend was a pretty good one for getting things done. I went out and was social and got work done on a variety of projects, not the least of which was tidying up the house sufficiently to have Zig's Mom over for a mini Super Bowl party.
On Friday, I left for the Hromnice Day event in Shattered Oak with Shava and Giles. I managed the "Flash Packing" effort without forgetting anything but feast gear and sufficient cash to get me through the entire weekend. (I owe Shannon $5 and Eithni a dessert. I probably would have been fine on everything except I wasn't planning on eating feast at the event. I almost never opt to eat feasts at events because I usually find the cost for quality ratio on the meal to be less than that which I would get in a restaurant. Besides which, if I go to a restaurant, I can change back into my civvies and don't have to bring/wash my own dish.) I really need to get a suitable basket for the Feast gear. Most of my eventing kit stays packed from one event to the next, and there's no reason that the feast gear can't become part of this kit. I just need to find a suitable carrier and make it part of the mental "default pack" list. I'm thinking that the best way for this to happen as a natural progression is to put my coffee making supplies in it. Not only is it a logical place for the coffee kit to go, but the coffee is also something that I'm less inclined to forget than say... a fork. It's true. For some reason, in my world, coffee is more important than forks.
For the "Thing-A-Day" chanllenge on Saturday, I learned how to spin with a drop-spindle. It's actually easier than it looks in the pictures and descriptions, and I am, apparently, already fairly good at it. The young man that taught me was fairly disgusted/impressed at my moderately professional looking first attempt. I'm debating whether or not I should get a drop spindle for my eventing kit. While the drop spindle is cheap ($15 or so.) and portable, the production of string on one is quite slow, and I'm not certain that I'd use the thing often enough to accomplish anything with it in the next decade. The wheel I've already got has a fast enough production rate to mostly keep me from getting bored with a project before it's even properly started. What I DO think is a good idea is getting a drop spindle for my littlest sister. She's trying to learn how to knit, and was impressed by my spinning wheel. There is no way I can afford to give her a spinning wheel as a gift in the near future, but a drop spindle is the perfect no-reason gift to give her to keep her out of trouble over the summer. I think, perhaps, I shall get myself a drop spindle and see how things go, and if I do not use it, or if it frustrates me, I shall gift it to Littlest Sister. If I love it and use it daily, then I will just get her a new one.
Sunday's "Thing" for the day was continuing to knit the sock for Mom. I have turned the heel and will probably be finishing sock #1 this week. I tried it on and it seems a bit on the tight side. I really hope she doesn't shrink it in the wash or she'll never be able to get her foot into it. Then again, I have a feeling she won't actually wear the socks so much as she'll whip them out at every opportunity to show friends what her daughter can accomplish if she's truly bored enough. ;-)
Tonight I'm hoping to get in a run to JoAnn fabric so that I can get the necessary ingredients to a couple more projects. I need some kind of dye magnet for washing a couple of items that I accidently put together with the fabric that HADN'T BEEN PREWASHED. (Duh... I had 2 pieces of black linen that HAD been washed and 1 piece that HADN'T, and guess which one I appliqued? You are correct. I am teh DUMB.) and some clear vinyl tablecloth cover to make little wallet-y things for fighter cards. (Eithni's little project inspired me to create a little project of my own... Hopefully it's something that I can KEEP SIMPLE ENOUGH to mass produce.) Plus, I think I'm about to run out of black thread. Quelle horreur!
