Fiber Weekend:

Last night, I finished the Friedy sweater. He tried it on, and it fits... He promises to wear it when the weather is a bit cooler and there is a *need* for a wool sweater.

This morning I spun up the remainder of the roving that I had purchased for the Friedy sweater... There was enough to make 2 balls of yarn. I think maybe I will use it to make a pair of wrist warmers or socks. I got some size 1 knitting needles a while back and I want to see what kinds of things I can do with them... They seem so tiny... I'm a little concerned that I won't be able to see what I'm doing, and adding stitches will be impossible.

This afternoon, I put together my new loom. It didn't take too long to put it together... And then I dove right into the part of the weaving that I was DREADING: the warping...

Actually, it wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. there were some things that I thought were going to be problems, but I managed to get them sorted out. Friedy had to help me with getting the warp wound onto the loom (he held the warp threads to keep tension, while I papered and wound the back beam. So... Now the warping is done, and I've woven a few inches. It's great fun and it looks satisfactory - if a bit see through.

I'll try to get some pictures for tomorrow. Tonight, I think I need to get back to the spinning... I have a budding weaving habit to supply.

Yay! Fiber goodness! I can't wait to see pictures... or products!

I want to see a picture of the Friedy sweater! Oh, weaving too, but I'm ever so interested to see the sweater (knitting has always been beyond me).

Posted waaaay more pictures than I probably should have, but they're up!

I think the next man-sized sweater I do will be more complex and involve some cabling... That was probably one of the most boring sweaters I have ever knit... Barring the fact that I had to spin up all the yarn first!

Small needles usually need to be used with small yarns, just to let you know. If you try to use size 1's with worsted-weight yarns, you'll end up with something knitted so small and tight that you're right, you won't be able to increase/decrease, and even finding the right spot to insert the needle for a stitch becomes hard. I use size 1's for socks with sock yarn (sock yarn usually comes listed as fingering or sock weight, and recommends sizes 3-5 needles, but socks need to be knitted a bit tighter than other things).

yeah... The yarn I made for the Friedy sweater actually ended up being pretty fine stuff. The grey corridale that I just got to weave with seems to want to be much thicker when spun, so I have a feeling I'll end up with sweater yarn, rather than sock yarn...

However the leftovers from the Friedy Sweater may make a fine pair of matching socks for him... provided I ever figure out how to knit a sock... This is where you come in...
