So here is the sweater that I finished for my baby sister's 21st birthday:

**SEE?! See that! There! Behind the SWEATER!... It's the work-room FLOOR! The one that [livejournal.com profile] liz_bet helped me find last night! I haven't seen that since PENNSIC!!!**

Now I just have to get it boxed up and sent. Hopefully I'll have time to get to the post-office on Saturday. I'll probably need to write myself a note, or I'll forget.

After [livejournal.com profile] liz_bet left last night, I used the rest of my steam to do about 3 loads of laundry in order to clear the bedroom floor... I still need to re-sort my garb, but that will only take a few minutes... For tonight's labors (aside from the framing and matting of awards) I'm torn between the backlog of spinning I need to do in order to finish up that last half-sleeve on the Friedy Sweater OR attempting to use up some of the linen I've accumulated... Now that my work-room is clean, I'm beginning to feel an urge to sew.

Zig and I really don't have plans to go to any events soon... Maybe Boar's Head, but I'd like to (for once) make a dress that wasn't concieved the NIGHT BEFORE THE EVENT (and is therefore held together mostly with safety pins). Plus I've always admired the simplicity of the fitted gothic dresses, but have never been brave enough to try making one. The sleeves are still a bit mysterious to me, but I'm sure that with enough extra fabric, [livejournal.com profile] liz_bet will help me get it all sorted out.

The frustrating thing for me is that in all the zillion websites I've been to that are devoted to the construction of this dress, none of them really covers how to go about fitting the sleeve. There are entire photo journals devoted to the proper fitting of the bust, but since I haven't GOT a bust, that's not the part I'm worried about. I've got ARMS. And those arms require sleeves. And sleeves have always been somewhat difficult for me... Probably because I'm too lazy to use the required number of pins.

ANYWAY, if anyone has made a gothic fitted dress, and would like to assist me in this endeavor, please feel free to volunteer to sort me out...

You are incorrect. Vievee is not 21. She's, like, 8. Maybe 12, tops.

Nice sweater! I love the colors and the details.

You might find this site to be helpful. http://cottesimple.com/
On this site there is an article on the "elbow hinge" found on a mans gambeson and how that could be applied to a female fitted sleeve.

Sleeves are tricky, but this may help you.

Well, I have no idea about sleeves, but the sweater is lovely.

I have the book mentioned in that dress diary, The Medieval Tailor's Assistant. I'll take a look when I get home (which may not be for a day or two), and see if I can find anything about fitting the sleeves.

heh. I can loan you the cd that Mistress Gwyndlyn CaerVirthin made of my cotehardie fitting. Plus the instructions manual. Plus the muslin. :) Did I mention she got her Laurel in 14th C. costuming?

I'll dig those up tonight and drop them off along with the computer.

I can help you out if you wish.
I'm attending Boar's Head and will be staying with Blue if that Sunday would be helpful. If you are trying to get something done before Boar's Head, I could be convinced to visit Madison this weekend or we could discuss finding time over the Thanksgiving weekend (depending on your plans - my plans are not yet nailed down).

Looooove the sweater! Beautiful braided cables.

You cannot (yet) do socks, I cannot (yet) do sweaters. I think we are even stevens.

I'll help you make a sweater pattern if you help me design a sock...

Hehehe... I KNOW. But I refuse to believe that this makes either of us *old*. I'll see if I can dig up decent electronic pictures of the family for you... I know I have one somewhere that is moderately recent...

You know what's REALLY scary? She's planning her wedding for May. She called to make sure it wouldn't conflict with any plans I might have...

Iohanna is the local cotehardie wizard. If you can make an appointment with her or get to one of the costumers' meetings, she should be able to help you out.

It's great looking. I was intrigued with the work you were showing me previously and with the knitting method you use.

Pretty cool. I am glad you posted this.

so that anonymous comment was from me and I evidently was not recognized at the time that I posted. Sorry about that.

You never told me you had a little sister closer to my age.....

big sister protection?

I wouldn't worry about it; the state won't let a 12-year-old get married.

But yes, pictures! Pictures good.

Yep... I've been all over the intarwebs lately looking at possible patterns, and I stopped briefly at those two sites... Only I'm still not entirely sure how they get that shoulder curve. I know how they create the pattern for the body, but how do they create the pattern for the sleeve?

How, how, how????

;-)

I think there are a couple of pictures of me working on said sweater at the Crown Tourney you and 'Friediness hosted... The hood part came out a little big, but overall, I am quite pleased with the fit.

ARGH! I left the costuming stuff at your house! *facepalm*

I'll get it when you come back from vacation. Have a good Thanksgiving! I have a feeling you'll be coming home to a Windows XP computer instead of your old Windows 98 machine... I also have a sneaking suspicion that your computer may go out and change it's legal name to "Dell" from "Presario." I'm not sure yet... It depends on whether or not I can talk it out of the brain transplant...

Hello! Sorry it took me so long to reply, but it took me a bit to connect your LJ with a face!

I would be honored to have your help over Thanksgiving weekend, if you have the free time! 'Friediness has to work on Saturday, so I will have loads of time available that day if you find yourself at loose ends. (Maybe you'll be able to beat some of my worse sewing habits out of me...)

:-)

As your schedule congeals, let me know.

Thanks! I've been tweaking that particular pattern to perfection over the course of my last 3-4 sweaters, and I think I've finally got it where I want it!

From: [identity profile] mightyjesse.livejournal.com

Nope, I just wait until there is *useful data* to give out. She's been dating the same guy since high school, so telling you I have a younger sister is basically useless. One is married and the other one is about to *get* married...

From: [identity profile] mightyjesse.livejournal.com

I can't remember what I was trying to show you, but the pattern itself is pretty easy to generate using Excel.

Unfortunately, it doesn't *quite* work right for boy proportions... I haven't yet worked out why that is... I think it's the big boy shoulders that mess it up...

Every other Monday, at traveling locations. This time of year the dates get screwy because of the holidays. Check with iohanna for dates (info in the Skein, available on the Jsra page as a PDF).

From: [identity profile] mightyjesse.livejournal.com

I screened your comment since it included your email address, and I'm just paranoid enough that I try to avoid putting personal information out on the intarwebz... :-)

damn that *useful data* thing.

How's you? apart from sick?
